SHAH ALAM, 25 July - A hundred odd students and intending students of tertiary institutions, along

with House Officers, junior Medical Officers and allied health officers underwent a full-day training and workshop aimed at invigorating oneself while facing new challenges in study and career development.

The program called Himpunan Minda Medik 2009 & Persediaan Pelajar Ke Luar Negara (HMM'09) was held on July 25, 2009 and organised by Kelab Siswa HALUAN Malaysia (HALUANSiswa) and Kelab Kesihatan HALUAN (KKH) at the Kompleks HALUAN Penyayang, Shah Alam.

The Chirmain for KKH, Dr Basir Towil makes a welcoming address Participants drew from all over the country and were exposed to methods on self- fortification with emphasis on spiritual and mental development aimed at guiding them while studying and pursuing career paths. This session was led by Tuan Haji Norazman Shamsuddin, a  HALUAN activist who is adept with youths. Since a significant number of participants were those in the field of medicine and allied health sciences, a special paper regarding the realities and vision of Muslim youths in the medical arena was successfully presented by Dr Mohd Zamrin Dimon, a cardiothoracic and lung surgeon.

Several participants had a first encounter with HALUAN and were glad they did. They were coaxed to join the program by peers in campus as well as siblings and relatives who had previously been exposed to HALUAN’s motivational and effective learning camps while still in school.

In the afternoon, the participants were dispersed into five workshops where they were  able to better relate to seniors in their respective fields of study or vocation. According to the Bureau Chief of IPT-KKH, Dr Burhanuddin Busu, the groups were the HOs and MOs, allied health sciences, and existing students and intending students destined for foreign universities (medical and religious fields).

“The workshops are important because we endeavour that future students and workers do not become digressed easily while pursuing their ambitions causing them to lose sight of  responsibilities to the religion. That’s why the theme this time around is Islamic Education the Catalyst for a Better Ummah, as the boon of knowledge and good fortune  comes about when one is close to Allah SWT,” added Ir. Solehuddin Shuib as Bureau Chief of  HALUANSiswa.

Another attractive fact at HMM'09 is the direct assistance provided by student volunteer members of HALUANSiswa as facilitators. They successfully led the introduction and ice-breaking sessions and co-managed the program smoothly.

“I love the way this program runs. Not everything is confined to lectures and more lectures as there are outdoor activities. This is the differentiator we need as we approach the young where we must become interactive and proactive,” said Dr Mansor Yahya, a cardiologist with Hospital Kota Baru who was one of the workshop moderators. Along with several peers who were in their 40s, he gladly took part in the exhilarating ice-breaking session.

Come nightfall, the participants and volunteers were feted to a BBQ dinner with lamb and chicken on the grill. It was at this moment that the participants were able to get up close and personal with their seniors to ask questions and express their worries and concerns so as to seek the best solution as muslimin and muslimah.

The HMM'09 is the apex event to the periodical program called the Motivasi Minda Medik or 3M held several times in a year, which was mooted by the KKH to cater to the needs of students of medicine and allied health sciences in local and foreign universities.
